| Hatchet is a book about a boy named Brian Robeson. Brian is a thirteen year old boy going to Canada to visit his father for the summer. His parents are divorced. On the way to the airport, his mother gave him a hatchet. The pilot of the plane had a heart attack and died. Before he died he taught Brian the basics of flying the plane. After the pilot's death Brian flew the plane by himself. He crash-landed the plane in an L-shaped lake. He lives by the lake by himself, building a shelter, making tools, hunting for food, trying to stay alive. The whole time that he is living by the lake, he gets pricked by a porcupine, attacked by a bear, sprayed by a skunk, pummeled by a moose, and thrown around by a tornado. The day after the tornado he went out of his shelter and saw the tail of the plane sticking out of the lake. He built a raft to go out to the plane. He made a hole in the plane with his hatchet, and looked for the survival kit. He found it a while later and made his way back to his shelter to look in it. He found all kinds of stuff that would have been helpful earlier when he first landed. There was a gun, matches, a sleeping bag, a cook set, first-aid kit, food, and an emergency transmitter. He turned the switch back and forth on the transmitter because he didn't know how to work it. Later that day he was rescued by a pilot mapping Cree trapping areas. The pilot heard the transmitter. He took Brian back to civilization. |
