Chapter 1
|
In chapter one, Matilda awoke with a mosquito buzzing in
her ear and the drowned out sound of her mother calling her from downstairs.
She also found a dead rat.

Chapter 2
|
In chapter two, Matilda’s mother noticed that their young
servant girl Polly was missing.
Everyone started assuming things about where she could be, not knowing the
devastating truth.

Chapter 3
| In the chapter three, the news had come, Polly was dead. Everyone mourned all day. They were walking around crying. |
Chapter 4
| In the fourth chapter, Matilda had to do most of the left behind work that Polly had left behind. She had to serve the customers in the coffee shop. While working in the coffee shop her grandfather and his parrot that he won in a bet came in. While they work the gentlemen discuss the probabilities of Polly's death. |
Chapter 5
| Mattie’s mother sent her to the grocery and while she was getting the groceries she seen a boy she liked named Nathaniel Benson. While they were talking the church bell rang which implied that someone else had died, and how many times it rang was how old the person was. |
Chapter 6

As they watched the cat chase the squirrel, the bell rang
and at the door was a boy with a message to Matilda and her mother inviting
them to a party.

Chapter 7
|
Matilda and her mother went to the Olgilvie’s for the
party. While they were at
the party the eldest daughter Colette was complaining
about being hot then
all of a sudden she passed out.
Mother thought it was the “fever.”

Chapter 8
| Matilda and her grandfather went to the printing shop and the men who were in their were chatting about the changes that occurred during the time of the disease and the people who were fleeing because of it. |
Chapter 9
|
Matilda’s mother gets ill and Matilda has to do the
majority of the work around the house. Mother began to throw up blood and
her eyes began to roll to the back of her head.

Chapter 10
|
Mattie finds out her mother has the fever
then her and her grandfather left the house to avoid catching it.
They decided to head to a farm. They keep away from people with the
fever.

Chapter 11
|
Mattie finds out that her grandfather catches the dreaded
disease, Fever. Then her and her grandfather are forced to get there
on way to the farm. So they have to walk all the way to the farm.

Chapter 12
| Mattie and her grand father were threw out of the wagon when the farmer discovered that grandfather had the yellow fever. Then they had to walk on their own to get home. |
Chapter 13
| Grandfather needed some food to get his strength back, so Mattie went and gathered more water, berries and fish. On the way back to grandfather she passed out. |
Chapter 14
| Mattie awoke in a hospital in Bush Hill. Her nurses name was Mrs. Flagg. Mattie believed that Bush Hill was no place for a young girl to be. |
Chapter 15
| When Mattie awoke from her sleep Mrs. Flagg and Dr. Deveze sent her to the barn since she felt better. |
Chapter 16
| Mattie and her grandfather are riding along with five fever orphans who were being sent to an orphan home. |
Chapter 17
| Someone breaks into the coffeehouse and steals and damages everything downstairs |
Chapter 18
| In chapter 18, Matilda was glad to take a bath. She was glad because she bathed only on special occasions. |
Chapter 19
| Mattie and her grandfather got robbed, and during the robbery Mattie managed to cut one of the men. Grandfather died because the men beat him to death, which means Mattie was all alone. |
Chapter 20
|
The burial men came to
get her grandfather. The men
didn’t want to pray over her grandfather ,but she made them do it
anyway. On the way walking to
anywhere she found a little girl named Nell.

Chapter 21
| Nell and Mattie Found Eliza, who was delivering food to the sick. She had made a promise to deliver food to all the sick and needed. |
Chapter 22
| Eliza took Mattie and Nell back to her house where she fed them soup and gave them a place to stay. After everyone had eaten dinner and all the children was asleep Mattie and Eliza talked about what was going on. |
Chapter 23
| Mattie and Eliza went to the orphan home. They noticed that two little children were sick their names were William Nell. |
Chapter 24
|
They were sick very bad. Mattie had to take care of the two boys. While Eliza delivered the twin food.

Chapter 25
| Mattie and Eliza took care of the two children they seen at the orphan house because they felt sorry for them. They looked poor and hungry. |
Chapter 26
| In Chapter 26 the frost had came. Everyone in the town was glad, especially Matilda. The frost was the only thing that could kill the dreaded disease fever. |
Chapter 27
| Eliza had an idea to have a small Thanksgiving feast. During the feast Mattie asked Eliza to be her partner working in the Cook Coffee Shop. |
Chapter 28
| When Mattie and Eliza opened up the business there was a lot of customers. On the third evening after the shop closed Mattie went home and her mother was there. Everyone was happy. |
Chapter 29
| Mattie and her mother talked about what happened. |
