| Gary Paulsen was born May 17, 1939 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Gary had to stay with his grandmother and several aunts because his father, Oscar Paulsen, was in the military and was stationed in Europe in World War II. Gary moved a lot because of his father worked in the military. Gary mother, Eunice Paulsen, worked in a factory. Gary parents were alcoholics. Gary ran away from home when he was 14 years old and went to travel with a carnival. Gary had a lot of jobs so he could support himself. Gary got a library card, so he read a lot of books. Gary liked to read books. When Gary was in school, he failed ninth grade, but he did graduate with a D-Average. He attended Bemidji College from 1957-1958. Gary joined the army in 1958. He also attended the University of Colorado in 1972. Gary had a heart attack in 1990 that stopped some of his physical activities. Gary was also interested in dog sledding, motorcycling, sailing, and hunting/trapping animals. Gary wrote a lot of books such as; The Tucket Series, Fox Man, Dancing Carl, Dogsong, The Voyage of the Frog, Hatchet, The Winter Room, The River, The Haymeadow, Dogteam, A Soldier's Heart, The Rifle, Brian's Winter, The Glass Cafe, Brian's Hunt, Brian's Return, The Quilt, and The Time Hackers. Gary loves dogs and horses. Gary has many of them. Gary and his wife, Ruth, are living on a ranch in New Mexico. |
