Chapter 20 - 24

When the burial men came to get Grandfather,  she heard a voice that said bring him out.  They threw him on a wheel barrow that already had dead Fever victims on them.  Mattie walked with them to burry her grandfather.  When they got to the burial site Mattie wanted them to pray over her grandfather.  At first, they refused, until Mattie made a big fuss over it and then they did it.  It made her feel a little better not much though.  On her way walking to find some help, Mattie heard this noise coming from an open doorway.  As she went to see what it was she found that it was a little girl whose name was Nell.  Nell's mother had died some Mattie decided to bring her along.  Even though she really couldn't care for her.  On there way walking trying to find some help, Mattie found Eliza.  She found her in a house handing out food for the needy people and Fever victims.  Eliza took Mattie back to her brothers house, where she was staying.  Eliza gave them soup and a place to stay.  After everyone had eaten dinner and all the children had fallen asleep Mattie and Eliza talked about what had went on.  Later on, all the little children got sick with the Fever.  At first they took them to the orphan house, but then Mattie didn't want to leave them there so her and Eliza took them back to the house and care for them themselves.  Eliza wanted to bleed the children, but Mattie thought that wasn't a good idea.
