| Mattie finds out that her mother has the dreaded disease Yellow Fever. Mattie and her Grandfather were forced to leave the house to avoid catching the Fever. Grandfather hired a farmer to give them a ride to a friends farm in the country. When they arrived at the outskirts of the town of Pembroke they were stopped by a few men. The men said anyone who was sick could not enter the town. So, Mattie and her grandfather were put out of the wagon because Grandfather was sick, but not with the fever, just a summers grippe. They had to walk the rest of the way. After a few days Mattie's grandfather became more and more ill. Therefore, Mattie has to take care of sick grandfather. gets sick ,but not with the fever just a cold. Mattie thought she should get some berries and water so her grandfather could regain his strength. In order to find the water Mattie used the old soldier's trick her grandfather taught her, which was following the line of willow trees. On one of her trips to get her grandfather some food Mattie gets sick and blacks out. When she awoke she found her nurse, Mrs. Flagg , standing over her. Mrs. Flagg told her that she had the Yellow Fever and that she was in a hospital in Bush Hill. Mattie was always taught that Bush Hill was no place for a young girl to be. |
